Boardgames Australia is organising a forum where you can come and learn about the use of board games in education from teachers, educators and games professionals. Playing board games at school and at home can improve numeracy, literacy and social outcomes for children as well as being great fun. The Learn About Play Educators’ Forum will - describe recent research outlining the benefits of using board games to support learning, - give you practical advice on how to incorporate games into the classroom and alternate school-based programs, - and show you ways to share the joy of board games from school to home, while perhaps raising some money for your school. The Forum is aimed particularly at teachers and home educators, but is open to everyone with an interest in exploring the use of board games in education. The forum will involve some hands-on play, and sample lesson plans will be provided.
Schedule:
10am - 10.10am. Welcome from Boardgames Australia.
10.10am - 11.10am. Learn through play. Dr Wood Challenge Centre, an Australian company that designs award-winning games and puzzles will make a presentation about a 12 week lesson plan based on the Kaleidoscope Classic and other of their games, that has been in use in Queensland schools for several years. There will be practical advice, as well as a discussion of the effectiveness of the program.
